Abraham Laflin 1750-1795.

Abraham was the third son of Jonathan Laflin and his wife Elizabeth Hix. When he married Dinah Harvey at Creeting St Mary in 1782, he was described as "yeoman", which may imply that he was one of the more successful members of the family. So far as I can determine, a yeoman would have either owned or rented a farm and probably employed farm-labourers to work on it.

The most likely for Dinah's baptism in the Creeting St Mary registers was that relating to Dinah Hawes or Harves in 1759, the daughter of Isaac and Sarah. Other entries around that date refer to the children of Isaac and Sarah Harvey, suggesting that this is indeed the correct entry.

After the marriage, the family seems to have returned to Ringshall and records of five of their children are found there. On 17th November 1786, as part of another case, it was noted that "The farm situated in Ringshall and Bricett is rented to Abraham Laflin for £26-16-0 per annum".

Abraham was buried in Ringshall in April 1795, when he was only 45 years old. This left his widow Dinah with four young children (Abraham aged 12, Jonathan aged 11, Elisabeth aged 8 and Dinah aged 1). Two years later, in February 1797 Dinah Laflin, widow, married John Ramsey in Great Bricett. No more details of this couple have been found in Great Bricett, but “Dinah Ramsey of Bricett” was buried in Ringshall in January 1837.

THEIR CHILDREN.

1. ABRAHAM LAFLIN married Mary Simonds and they had two children.

2. JONATHAN LAFLIN married Sarah and they had 9 children.

3. JOHN LAFLIN was baptised on 14th April 1786 and born 2 weeks earlier. John Laflin was buried on 30th March 1795, at the age of 8.

4. ELISABETH LAFLIN was born and baptised in July 1787 and was only 8 years old when her father died and 10 when her mother remarried. She married Will Southgate in Battisford in June 1810, when she was 23. In the 1841 census William and Elizabeth Southgate were living in Dattons Cottage, Stowupland with their two children (William Southgate aged 13 and Mary Ann Southgate aged 15) and William was working as an agricultural labourer. Also with them were Sarah Green (aged 40) and Elizabeth Southgate (aged 45).

5. DINAH/DIANA LAFLIN was baptised in December 1794 and presumably born a few weeks earlier. She was only one year old when her father died and three when her mother remarried, so she probably though of John Ramsey as her father. She married John Grimwood in Ringshall in May 1822, when she was 28.
In the 1841 census, Jonan and Dinah Grimwood were living at Combs with eight children and Jonathan was working as an agricultural labourer. John (born 1816) and Hannah (born 1821) were probably not Dinah's children, but the other six were born after the wedding and so were probably the children of John and Dinah. They were William (age 15), Robert (age 10), Mary (age 9), Sarah (age 6), Susan (age 3) and Walter (age 4 months).
