James was married twice, firstly in January 1794 to Bathsheba Newstead. She was buried on 9th August 1796 at the age of 25, which implies she was born in 1771 and was 22 or 23 at the time of their marriage. They had two children baptised in Ringshall, namely Samuel in 1784 and John in 1796. John may have been buried the following February.

James’ second marriage was in November 1797 to Ann Ramsey and they had a large family, some of whom died young. In the 1841 census, James and Ann were living at Red House, Ringshall. With them were their daughter Sarah and son-in-law James Pearl as well as grandchildren Jemima aged 15 (Benjamin’s daughter) and William aged 9 (Abraham’s son).

Ann died on 13th November 1847, aged 71 - this suggests she was born in 1776 and was 20 when she married James. James himself died on 20th March 1848, aged 81.
